By Recycle Man

The European Union has made some new directives that forces the battery producers of the world to get involved in the recycling of their products. Duracell, one of the largest battery producers of the world has signed an agreement with the European Union to help funding and recycling of batteries, and is waiting for the approval of the environmental agency. As per the new laws of European Union, every company that produces more than 1 ton of batteries per year must participate in the recycling scheme.

The new directive states that each battery producer will be forced to join the battery recycling scheme by October 15, 2009, otherwise they will be subjected to penalties by the European Union. The leaders of the European Union believe that the participation of Duracell in the recycling scheme will bring around what is called as a “recycling revolution” in the United Kingdom.

Procter & Gamble, the owner of Duracell recognized the European Union as a company whose philosophy synchronizes with their own. In addition Duracell said that, as a leading battery producer it was their duty to participate in the recycling program quickly. The directives also states that in addition to this, distributors and retailers who sell more than 32 kgs of batteries will be forced to provide free in-store recycling of batteries.
