One area which has caught the eye of the UK authorities is the recycling of old fridges and freezers and the potential impact on the environment. It may surprise many people to learn that the gases used in fridges and freezers, predominantly to keep the contents cold, have a significant impact upon the environment if they are not disposed of in a responsible manner.

If you buy a new fridge or new freezer today the chances are that the retailer selling you the new product will take away your old fridge or freezer to be recycled. Once the gases have been removed from the old machine they can then be disposed of in a manner which has as little impact on the environment as possible. Of the remaining elements of a fridge or freezer, around 80% can be recycled with more and more local authorities offering this particular service at waste depots up and down the country.

There are now stringent laws in place regarding the disposal of old fridges and old freezers and anybody or any company caught flouting these regulations is likely to be brought before the courts. Slowly but surely recycling regulations are being tightened and significant fines have and continue to be issued to those who consider themselves above the law.
