Government car scrappage scheme is 50% fulfilled

By Recycle Man

It has this week been revealed that the UK government’s car scrappage scheme is 50% fulfilled with over 150,000 cars now scrapped with their owners receiving discounts of up to £2000 on a new vehicle. The initial target by the government is 300,000 vehicles and the scheme is expected to use all funds available by early 2010. But will the UK government decide to extend the car recycling / scrappage scheme?

The scheme has been highly successful with many vehicles aged 10 years or over now leaving the road on a regular basis to be scrapped, only to be replaced by more efficient and more environmentally friendly cars. Even though there is still a distinct lack of electric cars and other similar vehicles on the road, the UK government is also involved in a variety of schemes which will see electric charging points installed up and down the UK.

Recycle your old car for a more efficient vehicle is proving to be a very popular pastime in the UK and despite initial concerns about the scheme and whether it would actually work, the benefit to consumers, the environment and the car industry as a whole is there for all to see. Will the UK government be brave enough to extend the car scrappage scheme beyond the initial 300,000 vehicles?
