Nokia and the self charging mobile phone

By Recycle Man

Nokia have managed to develop a new technology which effectively allows your mobile phone to recharge itself with no power connection. While the technology is at a very early stage it has been able to create enough energy to slowly recharge a mobile phone which should ensure that in emergencies there will at least be some power in your mobile. So how does it work?

Using a unique system the Nokia mobile is able to harvest the power from radio waves which are all around us and left unused until now. The system can work on any wavelength frequency and converts the radio waves into electromagnetic energy which creates a current which can then be used to recharge your mobile phone battery. The idea for the technology has been around for over 100 years but Nokia is the only company to have made a potentially viable product for the commercial market.

NokiaCurrently the system is able to harvest around 5 mW of energy from the air although Nokia expects to increase this to 20 mW in the short term and 50 mW in the longer term. One blast of energy will not be enough to power a mobile phone telephone call but over time the system will be able to recharge a mobile phone on standby mode and effectively give you a round-the-clock power, free of charge. Unfortunately the system is still being developed and is not expected on the market for between three and five years.
