Recycling electronic gadgets

By Recycle Man

Many people will be surprised to learn how many electronic gadgets are disposed of each and every year when in reality recycling electronic gadgets is perhaps one of the simplest forms of recycling. Aside from the fact that many components can be reconditioned, reused and resold, saving significant energy costs and damage to the environment, many of these electronic items which end up in landfill sites (hundreds of millions of tons a year) can contain potentially harmful elements.

It is common knowledge that the likes of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and an array of other potentially dangerous materials end up in landfill. If left untreated there is the potential to pollute water, air and the land around them and in many cases it can put local wildlife and human life in danger - potentially contaminating the area for years to come. Electronic waste, according to Earth 911, accounts for 70% of toxic waste found in landfill sites around the world and is a growing problem which needs to be addressed.

The frustrating thing for recycling companies and governments around the world is the fact that it is easy to recycle many of the components disposed of in landfill but we need to change the mindset of consumers and businesses around the world.
