Free shopping vouchers for those who recycle

A scheme announced in Windsor and Maidenhead will see residents able to clock up recycling points by simply recycling as much waste as possible. The initial response to the proposed scheme, which would see residents awarded points which can be converted into money off vouchers at Marks & Spencer, Subway, Coffee Republic and a whole host of other retail outlets has been very encouraging but there are some sceptics.

The scheme itself will see microchips placed in recycling containers in households across Windsor and Maidenhead and people will be able to access a website to monitor how many points they have accumulated and also arrange redemption. In order to avoid abuse of the system there will be a cap on the amount of points which any one household can build up in one year with a requirement that consumers are mindful of recycling and do not create waste simply to build up points.

This is a very clever way to tempt households across the UK to agree to microchips in their recycling bins although there are some people who believe the “bride” has more sinister undertones. However, anything which encourages the UK population to recycle more of their waste, reduce landfill and ultimately help the environment must surely be a positive thing?
