Should the UK car scrappage scheme be extended?

By Recycle Man

Many suppliers of electrical equipment in the UK have called upon the UK government to extend the UK car scrappage scheme to fridges and dishwashers as an alternative to recycling. While on the surface this may seem like a rather bizarre request it is well known that fridge and dishwasher technology has improved substantially over the last few years and many people are still using old machines which are highly inefficient and often require massive energy input.

There is also an individual issue with regards to fridges and the various liquids which are used to keep products cool. Despite the introduction of a European directive which means that fridges in particular have to be disposed of in an orderly manner and in a way which will do as little damage the environment as possible, there is still more which could be done. Offering discounts on new fridges and dishwashers could potentially see a large pickup in retail trade on the high street as well as exchanging some of the U.K.’s less efficient electrical equipment for new technology.

So far the UK government has failed to respond to the call although it will be interesting to see if a response is forthcoming in due course. If fridges and dishwashers join the car scrappage scheme, what next?
