The benefits of recycling paper

One of the easiest materials to recycle is paper but unfortunately millions upon millions of people around the world have not really taken this on board. There are many worrying facts about paper and the benefits lost by not recycling.

Did you know that over the average Christmas period up to 80 km of wrapping paper will end up in UK rubbish bins which is enough to cover an area the size of Guernsey. When you consider that this particular material is very easy to recycle and reuse, we are missing out on significant cost savings and help for the environment.

You may be surprised to learn that each tonne of recycled paper is said to save 7000 gallons of water, 400 kW of energy, 380 gallons of oil, 17 trees and 3 yd.³ of landfill space. Can you imagine the potential savings if we were to recycle 10 tonnes of paper, recycle 100 tonnes of paper, recycle 1000 tonnes of paper or even 1,000,000 tonnes of paper around the world?

However, perhaps the most startling statistic regarding the recycling of paper is the fact that recycled paper requires 70% less energy than paper made from raw materials. Again, when you multiply this around the world including the tonnes of tonnes of paper which are wasted each and every year, yet again we are missing out on significant benefits.
