Cambridge county council to recycle old road surfaces
Cambridge county council has this week announced a £300,000 scheme which will see a large number of roads across the county relayed and improved. However, this is not your standard road resurfacing program as the old road surfaces in question will be recycled and combined with chips and emulsion to improve the road surface for motorists.
When you consider the large quantities of tarmac and other materials used to resurface any road, the ability to take up the old surface, recycle and mix with chips and emulsion to create an even stronger and better quality surface is a godsend. It will not only save the county council on raw material costs with regards to road surfaces but will also cut out significant energy use and ultimately help the environment.
When you consider the full cycle from raw material to tarmac and the resurfacing of roads in the UK there are significant energy savings and cost savings to be made. If this particular scheme is successful, and there is no reason why it should not be, it is hoped that it will be replicated up and down the UK as the Green Revolution hits the UK roads. Which sector will be the next to come under the focus of the Green Revolution?
