Are recycling fines by the government really justified?
Amid growing concerns that the UK government and local authorities up and down the country are looking to introduce recycling fines for those who do not recycle enough of their waste there is a growing debate as to whether this is the correct way forward. In a perfect example of the carrot and stick approach, there are many in the UK who believe a softly softly approach to recycling will see more and more individuals and businesses respond rather than increasing taxes and threatening fines to those who are slow to respond to government demands.
Over the last few years we have seen the introduction of microchips into many bins around the country with the potential to use these microchips to remotely record the weight of waste disposed of by the UK population. There is a growing fear of potential weight allocations for each and every household up and down country and the prospect of fines for those who exceed their allowance.
While the authorities have dismissed these claims there is a feeling that the UK Big Brother state is growing in size and power. Whether we will see a consumer backlash in the short, medium or longer term remains to be seen but battle lines are certainly being drawn and conflict will come at some stage!
