Kerbside recycling scheme proves successful in York
A council instigated kerbside recycling scheme in York has proved to be such a success that the council is now looking to roll out of the scheme to a greater number of homes. The initial 700 home pilot recycling scheme in The Groves area of the city has seen a significant increase in the percentage of waste recycled while a significant reduction in the amount of actual waste. This is very much a win-win situation for the Council and will see a significant investment in this area in the future.
The recycling scheme will this year be rolled out to a further 1,000 homes, which are currently receiving a limited kerbside recycling service, although thousands more homes across the city will become involved in the short to medium term. The plan has taken in some of the more remote homes in the area allowing a significant recycling of cans, paper and other recyclable goods which will in due course be reflected in local council taxes and local council services.
While a number of councils across the UK have been criticised for their recycling services and recycling investments there is no doubt that York Council has been one of the most successful to date.
