Leeds city council shows the way in recycling rates
In the hustle and bustle of the green recycling revolution Leeds city council has issued impressive figures which have put many other counties in UK to shame. Household recycling rates in Leeds hit a record 38.15% in June which is a rise of 5.6% on the same period last year or 2100 tons of excess recycled materials. This is a very impressive figure and has already beaten the 34% average which the county council has set for this year although the 50% recycling target set for 2020 could be a little more difficult to reach.
There has also been a boost in the recycling and composting of garden waste helped by a county council funded program which sees garden waste collected and recycled. Despite early concerns that the garden recycling collection would be a waste of time and money, if Leeds city council is anything to go by then there are significant savings to be made in the shape of energy costs and environmental issues.
It will be interesting to see if any other county councils in the UK have performed as well as Leeds city council because these figures are very impressive and appear to have been the result of a well planned and well thought out strategy.
