Recycling reward scheme proves a massive hit
A Council led recycling reward scheme in Windsor and Maidenhead is proving such a hit that it has been extended to cover drinks cans, plastic and glass bottles, jars and paper. The scheme has been on trial for a few months now with nearly 4000 residents agreeing to partake in the first such trial of its kind in the UK.
The reward for recycling as much waste as possible is vouchers and discounts to a maximum value of £135 a year covering such businesses as Marks & Spencer, Coffee Republic, Subway and Vision Express. In the first of its kind we see a UK Council which would prefer to reward the population for recycling rather than penalise them!
Each of the residents who have agreed to take part in the trial has been given a special recycling bin which is micro-chipped and can accept mixed recycling waste. Each time the bin is emptied by the council it is weighed and the relevant data is used to allocate vouchers and discount on an ongoing basis. It is thought that the scheme will become popular in other areas of the country although at this moment in time, even though many other councils are watching the situation, nobody has yet stepped forward to replicate scheme.
