UK dumping its electronic waste on Africa
Recent evidence shows that a larger amount of electronic wastes also known as e-waste or unusable electronic equipments are being transported from the United Kingdom and dumped across various countries in Africa. Evidence also shows a large quantity of e-waste gets shipped illegally from the United Kingdom to Nigeria and Ghana.
Reports prove without doubt that, developing african countries like Nigeria and Ghana are becoming dumping spots for United Kingdom and other developed European Nations. Recently the EU has introduced some new laws to reduce the landfills by half for each of its member countries by 2013. These new laws make landfill dumping difficult and much costlier than before , making companies unable to dispose of their e-wastes properly. Many scammers are using this as an opportunity, and claim themselves to dump wastes for lower costs and then dump them somewhere else, often in the African countries particularly Nigeria.
It is estimated that nearly 50,000,000 tons of e-wastes generated every year gets ended up in illegal dumping. Evidence also shows that over half of the waste generated in the United Kingdom ends up overseas. The government of the UK says that disposing of such a large amount of wastes makes it extremely difficult to regulate, and also some business owners think that they are dealing with real companies who dump their waste properly, when this is not the case.
