Why is recycling important?
As we have mentioned on numerous occasions, one of the growth sectors in the UK economy is the recycling industry which has mushroomed over the last decade. While many consumers in the UK voluntarily recycle the vast majority of their waste, the UK government and local authorities have had to step in to incentivise and penalise people who have not joined the recycling trend at this moment in time. But why is recycling so important?
There are two main areas of benefit when items and elements are recycled which are the fact that fewer raw materials are required and ultimately this leads to a reduction in energy consumption. These two subjects obviously have a direct impact upon the environment, taking away the need for new raw materials and reducing the amount of gas being pumped into the atmosphere when energy is produced and consumed. However, one of the other benefits of recycling is the fact that the UK, and other countries around the world, has very little landfill space left to dispose of new waste, many of which can take literally hundreds of years to decompose.
The fact that the EU has also introduced massive fines for EU member states who do not hit their landfill and recycling targets is also a factor which has turned the head of the authorities in the UK, and ultimately led to more pressure being put upon consumers and businesses alike to join in. Recycling is here to stay, recycling is good for the environment and ultimately recycling is very good for your pocket!
